A recent Wall Street Journal analysis reveals that approximately two-thirds of S&P 500 CEOs experienced a decrease in their pay packages compared to what was initially awarded. Conversely, 140 CEOs earned more money than expected, with 46 CEOs receiving at least double the planned compensation. Overall, the median pay package for S&P 500 CEOs declined to $14.5 million in 2022, down from the previous year's record of $14.7 million. Stock or stock-option awards accounted for about 70% of CEO compensation, with equity representing a median of 77% of total compensation for the top-paid CEOs. While CEO compensation declined overall in 2022, approximately half of the CEOs received a raise, with a median increase of 11.4%.
