Squid Game's season 1 story centered on the troubles of the poor and desperate, but season 2 will shift to the opposite side of this coin. The contestants of the brutal games are so desperate for wealth that they are willing to put their lives on the line. Among them was Gi-hun, whose need for money saw him ready to gamble his mother's cash and sign away his bodily autonomy to organ sharks. He was the very definition of poor and desperate, but Squid Game season 2 will see him explore a whole new set of problems.

Squid Games' exploration of how far people would be willing to go for financial security is a social commentary on how a select few's extreme wealth leaves millions without the means to survive. The idea is that the working class is the real-life version of the titular Squid Games, as the most desperate are forced to turn to crime to stay alive. On the other hand, the grotesquely wealthy have far more than they could ever need, and the Netflix series briefly discussed how this could make someone just as desperate as poverty. Going into Squid Game season 2, this concept will likely be taken several steps further.
