Super Mario Movie Passes $1 Billion Mark at Box Office
  • last year
Illumination Studios, which co-produced The Super Mario Bros Movie with Nintendo, passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, a milestone reached by only nine other animated films. CEO Chris Meledandri attributes the success of the movie to appeal to parents who grew up playing the original 1985 video game and who want to share their nostalgia with their children. Walt Disney's Frozen 2 is the only animated film to have reached the mark faster than Super Mario. Illumination's success is partly due to the use of proven intellectual property, while some of its main rivals, such as Walt Disney's Pixar and Disney Animation, have experienced a dry spell, creating flops in back-to-back releases.
