Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day or May Day, is celebrated on the 1st of May each year to honor the achievements of workers and the contributions they have made to society.
The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to the late 19th century when workers in the United States and Europe began organizing and advocating for better working conditions, shorter working hours, and higher wages. In 1886, workers in Chicago organized a strike for an eight-hour workday, which resulted in a violent confrontation with the police, known as the Haymarket Riot.
After this incident, the workers' movement gained momentum, and May 1st was chosen as a day to commemorate the struggles and achievements of workers. In 1889, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1st as International Workers' Day, and it has been celebrated globally ever since.
Today, Labour Day is celebrated in many countries around the world with parades, rallies, and demonstrations. It is a day to reflect on the contributions of workers and to advocate for better working conditions, fair wages, and social justice.
On this Labour Day, let us honor and recognize the hard work and dedication of workers around the world and continue to work towards a more just and equitable society.
