The Avon Comedy Four recorded some Tin Pan Alley songs, but the ensemble recorded an equal number of spoken comedy routines (on these skits, the duo of Smith and Dale dominated--alas, their brand of comedy does not hold up well after the passing of a century).

Joe Smith was born Joseph Selzer.

Charlie Dale's real name was Charlie Marks.

These two were close childhood friends in the East Side area of New York City.

By 1902 or so, these two along with two other men performed as the Avon Comedy Four. The membership roster is unclear for the Avon's first decade.

Singer Harry Goodwin eventually became an early mainstay of the group.

The Avon Four performed in many vaudeville houses.

In early 1914, Irving Kaufman joined.

The Avon Comedy Four recorded two songs on June 7, 1916: "My Mother's Rosary" and Ray Goetz's "Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula."

The two songs were issued on a Victor disc that sold well.

The four also recorded some vaudeville routines, with Smith and Dale dominating.

The last Victor disc featuring the Avon Comedy Four was made in 1924. By this time the ensemble was not especially popular among record buyers.

Playwright Neil Simon based his play The Sunshine Boys on Smith and Dale.
