A rare tour of the closed Brutalist Birmingham New Street Signal Box

  • last year
The Grade II listed building on Brunel Street in Birmingham city centre divided opinion - but more than 7,000 applied for a tour of the historic building.
It closed after directing its last train on Christmas Eve 2022 after 57 years of service. The iconic Grade II-listed site had been at the heart of Britain’s railway network.
The pre-cast concrete signal box has divided opinion ever since opening in 1966 and at one point was even branded one of the country's ugliest buildings.
