Amazon ($AMZN@US) plans to lay off 9,000 employees in the coming weeks, according to a memo from CEO Andy Jaassey to staff on Monday. The cuts will largely impact the tech giant’s cloud computing, human resources, advertising, and Twitch live-streaming sectors. Amazon ramped up hiring during the COVID pandemic, during which the company’s global workforce skyrocketed to more than 1.6 million by the end of 2021, up from 798,000 in the fourth quarter of 2019. The company laid off more than 18,000 employees from November to January in its retail, devices, recruiting, and human resources sectors. Shares were down 1 percent when markets closed on Monday.
