Government plans to ‘level up’ art with close to £60M funding for the English regions

The UK government has pledged nearly £60 million in cultural funding for regions outside of London. Seventy museums, public libraries, and other venues in areas including "Red Wall" constituencies such as Walsall and Stoke-on-Trent will receive investment.

The funding will be shared as part of the government's plan to ensure everyone, regardless of their location, has access to the UK's world-renowned culture. However, the announcement came just four days after Oldham Coliseum confirmed its closure due to grant cuts by Arts Council England (ACE). From the new package, Bradford, named UK City of Culture for 2025, will receive £4.9 million, while the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent will get £5 million.
Basildon Borough Council in Essex will receive £4.4 million.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said the investment will help level up access to arts and culture for everyone and support brilliant arts organisations to upgrade their venues and create new projects that will be at the heart of their communities.
