Wout Weghorst looked close to tears after celebrating his first Old Trafford goal for Man United in their Europa League victory over Real Betis.

The forward, on loan from Burnley, scored United's fourth in a comfortable 4-1 first-leg victory in the last 16.

Before Thursday's clash, Weghorst had only scored one goal for the club in a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on January 25.

The Dutchman looked close to scoring earlier in the match, but he finally got his goal after 82 minutes when Scott McTominay's shot was parried straight into his path to tuck away.

Weghorst sprinted to the corner in celebration and looked overcome with emotion as though he was trying to hold back the tears, as his delighted teammates rushed to congratulate him.

After the match, Paul Scholes joked on BT Sport that Weghorst looked 'slightly pleased' before saying it was clear how much the goal meant to the striker - who has had his share of criticism thrown at him due to his lack of goals.

Scholes said; 'I think he was slightly pleased with his goal, I think he's been waiting for that.

'I think everyone at the club is pleased for him. The players around him.'

He went on to add: 'You could see how happy people were for him. He does do a lot of hard work, and work that probably goes unseen. You can see the players around him appreciate him.'

Owen Hargreaves, doing co-punditry with Scholes, said that while Weghorst has only scored two goals in 15 games, he has made an impact at the club.

He said: 'The thing is the team is playing well and since he's come he's started every game.

'Marcus Rashford is getting a lot of the headlines, as is Bruno Fernandes and Antony, but he's putting a shift in for the boys. Making runs, setting things up. You could tell he was delighted to get on the scoresheet.'

Scholes' comments come despite saying the Dutchman was not good enough for the club after their 7-0 loss to Liverpool.

It had been a tough week for Weghorst who was also criticized by fans for touching the 'This is Anfield' sign on his way to the pitch before the loss to their bitter rivals.
