The runway at Lukla Airport is one of the shortest and most challenging in the world. The runway is only 1,729 feet (527 meters) long and has a gradient of 12%, which means that it slopes upwards towards the end of the runway, making takeoff even more challenging. The airport only has one runway, which is made of asphalt and has a width of only 66 feet (20 meters). Because of the short runway, only small planes and helicopters are able to land at Lukla Airport.

The challenging terrain and weather conditions make Lukla Airport a dangerous place to land and take off. The airport is often shrouded in fog, and the winds can be very strong, making it difficult for pilots to navigate the approach to the runway. Due to the challenging conditions, the airport has been the site of several plane crashes over the years, and many pilots have lost their lives trying to land at Lukla.

On October 8, 2008, a Yeti Airlines Flight 103 crashed on its approach to Lukla Airport, killing all 18 passengers and crew on board Due to bad weather conditions and heavy fog, the pilot lost visual contact, nevertheless attempted a visual approach, as there are no Instrument landing systems installed at Lukla. The aircraft came in too low and too far left, which caused the aircraft to crash short of the runway, as the landing gear got caught in a perimeter fence on airport grounds
April 14th 2019, a Let L-410 STOL plane veered off the runway and into the airport's helipad, striking a helicopter with its rotor still spinning.

Despite the risks, Lukla Airport remains an important hub for tourism in Nepal, and thousands of trekkers and mountaineers use the airport every year to begin their journeys to Mount Everest and other peaks in the region.
