Raquel Welch, a 50-year-old American actress who appeared in over 30 films, including 'Fantastic Voyage' and 'The Three Musketeers,' as well as 50 television shows, died on Wednesday. She died at the age 82 years old.
Welch helped change the classic image of the Hollywood sex symbol in a period when the movie industry was still explicitly defining an idealised picture of sensuality for public consumption. According to AFP, she "passed away peacefully" following "a brief illness," according to her manager in an emailed statement.
Welch originally drew popular attention with her performance as a member of a tiny medical team inserted into the body of a wounded ambassador in the 1966 sci-fi adventure 'Fantastic Voyage,' which was notable for the skin-tight diving suit she wore in a sequence when she was attacked by antibodies. Her triumph in that film was followed by an iconic role in the ancient fantasy drama 'One Million Years B.C.,' which depicted cavemen and women coexisting with dinosaurs later that year. Despite having only a few lines of speech in 'B.C.,' images of Welch in a deer-skinned bikini made her a best-selling pinup and a global icon. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he appeared in films such as 'Bedazzled,' 'Bandolero!,' and '100 Rifles.' and the title roles in 'Myra Breckinridge' and 'Hannie Caulder'.
