Im Alter von elf Jahren wird der talentierte Tänzer Li Cunxin aus einem armen chinesichen Dorf in der Provinz Shandong zur Zeit der Kulturrevolution unter Mao nach Beijing gebracht, um dort Ballett zu studieren. Neben einem zermürbenden Training wird er der maoistischen Bildung unterzogen. Bei einem Aufenthalt in Texas merkt er, dass der Westen anders ist, als ihm die Lehre der Partei versucht hat, weiß zu machen. Dort lernt er auch die amerikanische Tänzerin Liz kennen und heiratet sie.
