Roy Keane Heaps Praise on Wout Weghorst Hits Back at Doubters after Striker’s Goal vs Forest

ROY KEANE hit back at Wout Weghorst’s doubters after he got off the mark for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest.

Marcus Rashford wasted no time putting the Red Devils in front, waltzing through the Forest defense and firing in on just seven minutes.

Sam Surridge thought he had leveled - and even copied Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration - but the goal was chalked off by VAR for offside.

Weghort grabbed his first United goal just before half-time with a fine finish on the rebound.

And Bruno Fernandes drilled in a late third to seal the 3-0 win in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

On-loan Dutch striker Weghorst, 30, had failed to score in his first two outings for United, leading to many fans questioning his abilities.

But Keane heaped the praise on him afterward, telling Sky Sports: “Great finish, look at his Weghorst's reactions.

“People have been critical that he's come to the club. That's what he's been brought to the club for. A huge goal for United.”

After witnessing his new boy break his duck, boss Erik ten Hag said: “I know it's what he is capable of. He has a really good goal-scoring record.

“We created some more really good chances. On the right side, it was a good action by Antony and Wout was on the rebound. It was a real striker's goal. Therefore we got it.”

And the scorer himself added: “A great night for us. A great result and of course after this first match, victory is a really good chance and to get to the final.

“It's always special and you want to score goals. You prefer to have this first one as quickly as possible so I’m really happy. It was an important moment also. It gave us a way better feeling at the break.

“I just turned to the goal hoping for a rebound and it came exactly like this. A good finish, it was nice.

“It's a great result for us, let's finish it next week.”
