Brenda ist eine alleinerziehende Mutter, die jeden Tag mit den Problemen konfrontiert wird, wie man eine Familie erzieht und nebenbei einem Job nachgehen muss. Doch eines Tages erhält sie die Nachricht, dass ihr Vater verstorben ist und sie wird zu der Beerdigung eingeladen. Doch Brenda hat ihn nie wirklich kennengelernt und deswegen hadert sie mit sich, ob sie der Einladung folgen soll, werden ihr doch alle dort anwesenden Personen überaus fremd sein. Aber als sie dann ihren Job verliert, beschließt sie nach Georgia zu fahren und an der Beerdigung teilzunehmen. Wenn es einen Moment in ihrem Leben geben sollte, an dem sie die Dinge richtigstellen kann, dann ist er damit gekommen. Gemeinsam mit ihren Kindern macht sie sich also auf die Reise.
