January 30 is of immense significance to India. Our Father of the Nation, Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Vinayak Godse, a member of the right-wing hardline group the
Hindu Mahasabha.Jammu & Kashmir has had a date with January 30. We examine the events of that led to this hijack
and the aftermath which changed the geo-politics of south Asia.

The Hijack
I take you through the events of January 30, 1971. An concise version is presented for you to be able
to understand the geo-politics of that period. Pakistan’s hand remained implicit in the episode. India
retaliated and stopped Pakistani flight from overflying Indian territory.
This became the run to the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Pakistan was cut to size. Bangladesh came into
existence. Yet Pakistan does not refrain from it’s nefarious activities and continues hostile acts in
Kashmir.
