In Reconstruction-era South Carolina, Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan, battling Elsie's congressman father and his African-American protégé, Silas Lynch.

Nach Kriegsende gewinnen die Schwarzen bei den Abgeordnetenwahlen in den Südstaaten und beginnen, ihre Herrschaft in den Staaten mit Unterstützung der Yankees zu errichten, während die Camerons den Ku-Klux-Klan aufbauen.
