Sherlock Holmes investigates when young women around London turn up murdered, each with a finger severed. Scotland Yard suspects a madman, but Holmes believes the killings to be part of a diabolical plot. ---------- Inspektor Gregson von Scotland Yard muss einen grausamen Verbrecher finden. Dieser tötet junge Frauen und schneidet ihnen den kleinen Finger ab. Da kein Zusammenhang zwischen den Opfern gefunden wird, geht die Polizei von einem Verrückten aus, der sein Unwesen treibt. Sherlock Holmes ist anderer Meinung. Ihm scheint alles zu logisch geplant, um das Werk eines Wahnsinnigen zu sein. Der Selbstmord von Sir George Fenwick scheint auf dem ersten Blick keine Verbindung zu dem Fall zu haben. Sherlock Holmes und sein treuer Helfer Dr. Watson kommen auf eine interessante Spur. Der angesehene Mann ist in der Mordreihe involviert. Doch er kann nicht verantwortlich gemacht werden, da er unter einem fremden Einfluss stand. Durch die Gesellschaft für Hypnose kommt er auf die Schliche von Professor Moriarty und dessen charmanten Komplizin Lydia Marlowe. Holmes lässt sich auf eine Hypnose und damit auf gefährliches Spiel ein.
