Gayety spoke with Dua Saleh about working with the cast, playing the nonbinary Moordale High student Cal Bowman, and what they thought of the chest binding scene between Cal and Layla. In the final episode of the season, Cal shows Layla a better chest binding method than the safety pins they were using before. It’s a beautiful scene and one that shares an essential message with the fans of the show. Saleh shared their own experience with chest binding and recounted a time they nearly passed out during a commute due to binding. “It’s something that a lot of trans people aren’t thinking about,” Saleh said about the dangers of chest binding. “Because they’re just caring about affirming themselves and caring about the aesthetics of it. I think it was really important that that was brought up just with my own personal experiences with binding and for the general public to know that that’s something that certain people are doing.” Season three of “Sex Education” is available now on Netflix.
