The famous temple namely Kalighat temple dedicated to Goddess Kali Kalighat is situated. It is one of the 51 Shakti Pithas. Although the present temple was built in 1809, the Kalighat temple is the oldest Kali temple in Kolkata. The right toe of Dakshina Sati is said to have fallen here. Thousands of footfalls of devotees are recorded here daily. Tuesday and Saturday are known to be very auspicious and the crowd increases a hundred times on these two days especially in the evening. The Kalighat temple in its present form is about 200 years old. The image of Kali in this temple is unique. It does not follow the pattern of other Kali images in Bengal. The present idol in touch stone was made by Atmaram Brahmachari and Brahmananda Giri. This temple is located on the banks of the river Ganges. Presently, the mother goddess has three huge eyes, a long protruding tongue and four hands made of gold. The Kalighat temple was located near the river Ganga, which is connected to the river Ganga or Bhagirathi. This original Ganga has now almost become a canal. Apart from this, there are many puja goods shops and various types of stalls. There are crowds of pilgrims and more small temples. The number of pilgrims to this Kalighat temple is increasing every year.
