Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former NATO Secretary General and current President of the Danish Democratic Union, arrived in Taiwan on January 3rd, to begin his visit to the country. Previously, Anders Fogh Rasmussen praised Taiwan's democratic achievements and emphasized his support for Taiwan's choice of future.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former Prime Minister of Denmark and Secretary General of NATO, founded the Alliance of Democracies Foundation in 2017, which participates in the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, held annually in the Danish capital. This event has become an important platform for dialogue among the international democratic community.

In 2019, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-sup was invited to attend and speak at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit and since 2020. President Tsai Ing-wen has been invited to speak at the summit every year, thus significantly increasing Taiwan's visibility in the international community.

The Alliance of Democracies Foundation notes that this is the first time that a former NATO Secretary General has visited Taiwan. Anders Fogh Rasmussen will focus on democratic support for Taiwan and EU-Taiwan relations, meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-teh, and interacting with legislators and civil society representatives during his three-day visit.

He was only a young member of Congress when he last visited Taiwan in 1994. Before the trip, Anders Fogh Rasmussen publicly stated that Taiwan has changed dramatically over the past 30 years, becoming not only an economic powerhouse, but also an important player in the global supply chain and that democracy has blossomed in Taiwan, which today, is a beacon of freedom for the region and the world.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen emphasized that the transformation of democratic Taiwan is already impressive, and that it is especially amazing to face the daily threats and provocations of a nuclear-armed Communist China. He will use this visit to express his support for a free Taiwan to choose its own future in a peaceful and independent manner.
