First Modern Pope to Resign, Benedict XVI, Dies at 95
He set the Roman Catholic Church on a conservative path
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, a retiring German theologian, died on Saturday. He will always be recognised as the first pope in 600 years to retire from his office.

On February 11, 2013, Benedict shocked the world by declaring in his usual soft-spoken Latin that he was no longer able to lead the 1.2 billion-strong Catholic Church that he had led for eight years through scandal and neglect.
