DH Changemakers 2023 | Samira Agnihotri | Why do drongos mimic other birds?

  • last year
Samira Agnihotri arrived at the Biligiri Rangan Hills in 2004, and immediately fell in love with the place. Having grown up around nature’s stimuli, she was drawn to study birds and their songs. She is now studying the Greater Racket-Tailed Drongo. This bird mimics the song of other birds in an attempt to engage with them and be a part of their community, just like humans switch between languages for the very same reason. Samira engages with the Soliga tribe as part of her research. And, she has noticed the ecological knowledge that is preserved in the community’s oral traditions. Samira is on a quest to preserve this knowledge through the Aadhi programme that engages the younger generation of Soligas and teaches them their cultures and traditions. Her ultimate goal is to facilitate the community to conduct their own research.
