Official description:

Isa Genzken’s installation, first conceived for Skulptur Projekte Münster in 2007, is considered one of the artist’s most comprehensive installations of sculptural assemblage. Evolved from the diorama-like maquettes featured in her preceding series ‘Empire/Vampire, Who Kills Death,’ this installation employs an early example of human-scale figures in Genzken’s work that has developed into spatial ensembles featuring mannequins in recent years. Comprised of partially altered and painted dolls that are seated under umbrellas on beach chairs and designer chairs, or placed in walkers and shopping carts, the work captures the tension between cheerful humor and vulnerability. Merging high with low as well as the individual with the societal, Genzken complexly engages the viewer and epitomizes her influential vision for sculptural assemblage.

Isa Genzken (born 1948 in Bad Oldesloe, Germany) makes innovative use of materials and methods in an extraordinary range of media. Her pioneering practice is widely recognized for its radical interrogation of sculpture and installation over the last 50 years. Genzken lives and works in Berlin.
