Argentina booked their place in the last eight for the 10th time in #FIFAWorldCup history, edging Australia 2-1 at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

Lionel Messi, who hadn't scored in the knockout stages of the competition, opened the scoring in the 35th minute. Julian Alvarez doubled the lead for Lionel Scaloni's side after making the most of an error by Socceroos goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

Australia pulled one back through an unfortunate own goal by Enzo Fernandez. But Argentina held their nerve to make it through.
