Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are extraordinarily intense explosions that have been seen in far-off galaxies in gamma-ray astronomy. They are the universe's brightest electromagnetic occurrences that are currently known to exist. From ten milliseconds to several hours, a burst can last. A longer-lasting "afterglow" at longer wavelengths is typically released after an initial burst of gamma rays (X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, microwave and radio).
