Alabama has put a hold on executions after failing its third execution since 2018. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has sought a review of the state’s capital punishment system following the latest failed execution. The move followed the uncompleted execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith. Ivey asked Attorney General Steve Marshall to withdraw motions seeking execution dates for two inmates. And she requested that the Department of Corrections undertake a full review of the state’s execution process. The state completed an execution in July, but only after a three-hour delay caused by a problem with starting an IV line.
