The technology is set to launch on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on Wednesday (November 9) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, alongside a JPSS-2 polar-orbiting weather satellite. NASA hopes the test will demonstrate how the heat shield can act as a giant brake to slow down a future Mars spacecraft.
