The rush to preserve First Nation art before it’s lost
  • 2 years ago
Researchers are working with a group of First Nations Australians to document indigenous art in the bark of boab trees and in some of the roughest terrain on earth. The carvings on 12 boabs estimated to be thousands of years old are mainly of snakes coiled and wrapped around the trees. But because the inner wood of boabs is soft and fibrous the trees collapse when they die meaning the artwork can be lost forever.
