What would happen if all the world's nukes were launched at once? There are enough nuclear bombs on Earth to completely wipe out all life on the planet.
The threat posed by nuclear weapons is unparalleled. Long-term catastrophic effects include destroying an entire city, which could kill millions of people and endanger the environment and the lives of future generations. The risks associated with these weapons are inherent to their existence. There have been only two military uses of nuclear weapons, the 1945 bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but there are still an estimated 13,400 nuclear weapons in existence today and more than 2,000 nuclear tests have been carried out.
Although the exact number of nuclear warheads in existence is classified, the Federation of American Scientists (NAS) estimates that there are approximately 19,000. Of these, 95% are Russian and American, while the United Kingdom possesses approximately 200.
A nuclear war would be catastrophic for our society. For hundreds of years, radiation would permeate the surface of the planet. Only in a subterranean environment, free of radiation, could life be sustained.
In theory, the detonation of so many nuclear weapons would trigger earthquakes all over the planet. If ice caps melted, it would cause sea levels to rise. The heat from the nuclear bombs would cause this melting. Countries' interiors would be safe, but their coastlines would be completely submerged. The current seven billion people on Earth would be reduced to the millions. As a result, there would be widespread problems such as starvation, unrest, radiation sickness, poverty, and so on.
