The niece of slain Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh is demanding that the U.S. government conduct its own independent investigation into her aunt’s death.

Akleh was fatally shot while covering unrest in the West Bank on May 11. A recent report from the Israeli government concluded there was ‘high probability’ she was shot by IDF soldier(s) but stated no individuals will be charged for the shooting.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson at the State Department told reporters that ‘our thoughts remain with the Abu Akleh family’ and that the U.S. government will ‘continue to raise directly with Israel that it closely review its policies and practices on the rules of engagement, to take additional steps to mitigate risk, to protect journalists, to protect civilian harm, and to ensure that similar tragedies don't happen in the future.’
