The EPA calculates the AQI by measuring five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: Ground level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. An AQI over 150 is considered potentially hazardous to the general population.
