Pope Francis urges aid for flood-hit Pakistan

Pope Francis calls on the international community to help Pakistan, where deadly floods have killed more than 1,000 people. The Argentine pontiff appeals for "generous international solidarity", and says he was praying for the victims. His comments come as he visited the city of L'Aquila in central Italy, which was hit by an earthquake that killed more than 300 people in 2009.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, the Swat River has become a raging torrent, washing away buildings and bridges and damaging roads, as the death toll from this year's monsoon has topped 1,000.

A Pakistani army helicopter conducts a rescue operation to evacuate flood victims in the lower Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
