Ronaldo was Beaten for Pace by Mohammed Salisu against Southampton as Ronaldo Crying & Applaud Fans

Manchester United edged past Southampton to claw themselves back into the top half of the Premier League, but it was a tough day at the office for Cristiano Ronaldo

Fans are convinced that Cristiano Ronaldo's days at the top are officially over after watching him get bested in a footrace with Southampton's Mohammed Salisu.

With Manchester United holding on to a narrow 1-0 lead at St Mary's, Ronaldo was introduced with a quarter-of-an-hour left to play, with Erik ten Hag hoping to take advantage of his ruthless, (supposedly) unwavering athleticism.

But something shocking happened just a few minutes into his cameo. He was beaten for pace - a sight the footballing world has only seen on a handful of occasions over the past two decades.

The striking thing was, that Ronaldo knocked the ball past the Southampton defender and initially had a couple of yards on him, yet Salisu not only managed to catch up but also dispossess the 37-year-old, before overpowering him to shield the ball out of play.

Needless to say, social media sat up and took notice.

"Seeing Ronaldo get outrun by Salisu is proof ‘father time catches up with everyone," one fan tweeted, while another wrote: "Ronaldo, chiseled like an Adonis but couldn’t outrun Salisu. He’s finished at this level."

A third posted: "Ronaldo not having the speed to outrun Salisu is a chilling reminder of our mortality and the inevitability of entropy and death".

Bruno Fernandes' sumptuous volley was the difference maker for United on the day as Ten Hag's side clawed their back towards Premier League high society with their second victory in as many games.

Ronaldo meanwhile continues to push for an exit, and with the transfer window closing in less than a week, getting outpaced by Salisu could, rather poignantly, be the last notable thing he ever does in a United shirt.
