ENGLAND's Commonwealth Games hockey match against Canada was marred by a vicious brawl.

And a player was sent off after "DROWNING" an opponent in a fit of rage.

The brutal scenes occurred in Thursday's Commonwealth Games battle between England and Canada.

The hosts were leading the match 4-1 when fighting broke out.

An England player appeared to bring down a Canadian opponent with his hockey stick before receiving a yellow card.

But a melee quickly ensued between England's Chris Griffiths and Canada's Balraj Panesar afterwards.

Griffiths seemed to tug on Panesar's staff, drawing blind fury from his opponent.

Panesar attacked grabbing Griffiths' shirt as the two men collided.

However, Panesar took things up a notch when he then grabbed Griffiths's neck, appearing to choke the England ace momentarily.

Griffiths responded like this, grabbing Panesar's shirt as he pushed him away.

Players from both sides stepped in to defuse the situation.

And Griffiths picked up a yellow card for his troubles.

However, Panesar did not go off so lightly.

He was shown a straight red card for his actions on the field.

And England took advantage and went up 5-1 almost instantly.

They then finished the game on a high thanks to their men's advantage, winning 11-2.

And the result means that England will play Australia in the semi-finals.
