Tchaikovsky: 1812 Festival Overture in E-Flat Major, Op. 49 (excerpt)

The 1812 Overture, as it's popularly known, was written in 1880 by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to commemorate the Russian defense against Napoleon's invading Grande Armee in 1812.

The 15-minute commemorative overture is a symbol of the United States Independence Day and is a common accompaniment to fireworks displays.

Despite Tchaikovsky not wanting to compose a festival piece, it went on to become one of his most popular works, alongside the ballet scores to The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake.

Point Classics brings you the '30 Second Classics' series. A collection of two hundred Classical works, edited into 30 second excerpts, showcasing the most recognisable and famous parts.
