Business Story EP.6 | Kim Sung Joo: The woman who resurrected German luxury brand MCM

MCM is an abbreviation of the brand's founder, Michael Cromer München, who launched the company in 1975 in the German city of Munich. He saw that the royal families and the ruling class of the time used trunk-style luggage. Inspired by the heritage looks, he created a new brand identity that is modern and dynamic.
MCM hit a peak in the mid-1990s before suffering in the global economic downturn of the 2000s. The business was acquired by Korean company Sungjoo Group led by renowned female boss Kim Sung Joo in 2005, and the same management is still in place today. The new MCM chapter focuses on “East meets West” fashion culture and has seen the brand resurrected under Korean operation.
