With a forecast of 41C, UK may experience its hottest day ever

On Monday, the UK could see its hottest day on record, with temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office has issued a red heat warning for much of England, from York and Manchester to London and the south-east.

High temperatures are also forecast in the rest of the UK, with amber warnings issued in the rest of England, Wales, and parts of Scotland.

The hot weather will continue on Tuesday, with nightly lows in the mid-twenties expected, before cooling off on Wednesday.

People should travel only "if absolutely necessary" on Monday and Tuesday, according to Network Rail, with some cancellations already announced and speed limitations in place across the network.

Experts have recommended people to drink water, draw their curtains as much as possible, and check on friends and family.

Because of human-caused climate change, heatwaves have become more common, more intense, and stay longer.
