Sri Lanka is spiralling into a deeper crisis as protests rage on. Wickremesinghe took charge as the interim President after Rajapaksa resigned, but the turmoil is far from over.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled from the Presidential Palace moments before thousands of protesters stormed its compound. He handed in his resignation after arriving in Singapore.

Earlier, Gotabaya’s brother Mahinda Rajapaksa was ousted as Prime Minister on May 9.
