Fire crews have rushed to tackle a woodland blaze which has broken out at a Devon beach. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of plumes of smoke and flames coming from woods by Babbacombe Beach, in Torquay. The fire broke out around 3pm today (Sun) in the headland by the beauty spot, where beachgoers had flocked to enjoy the heatwave. Several fire engines are in attendance as well as coastguards and RNLI. A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed people have been evacuated but there was no further concern for public safety. He said an investigation will take place into the cause of the fire and until this has concluded the cause remains unknown. He added: "Emergency services remain at the scene making steady progress, working to prevent any further escalation."
