It has been speculated that PM Modi has the vision to take over the Maharashtra government. After UP, Maharashtra has the highest number of seats in the Lok Sabha. Maharashtra also has a booming economy which supports PM Modi's 5 Trillion Dollar economy plan. 
This involvement has however put the Shiv Sena party at risk and led them to a political crisis.
