Like all deities of the Hindu pantheon, Ganesha has mythological origins. He is the son of Shiva and his wife Parvati, both of whom are human forms and yet they bear the head of an elephant. The reason for this follows his birth or more appropriately his creation. He was not born to Parvati as she is mere mortal.
