CNN reports rideshare company Uber
will once again start offering shared
rides in some major US cities.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Uber's carpool option was on hiatus for over two years.
The revamped option, UberX Share, will now be available to users in nine US cities including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Top rideshare companies Uber and Lyft attempted to boost the use of shared
rides before the pandemic.
Uber officials say UberX Share "reimagines the future of shared rides with greater efficiency and safety top of mind." .
Uber riders should expect
"an upfront discount and up to 20% off the total fare,
if matched with a co-rider along the way," according to officials.
Uber will reportedly limit the number of riders using its carpool option for now. .
The company says masking is
optional but recommended.
Uber officials hope to make transportation affordable and accessible, "especially in the current economic climate,".
as inflated gas prices continue to
burden all drivers in the country.
