Mary Jane West, popularly known as Mae West, was an American singer, playwright, screenwriter, actress and comedian who went on to become a glamour icon and remains one of the most talked about Hollywood personalities to this day. She had shown a special gift towards the performing arts right from the time that she was a child. West emerged as a big star in the vaudeville circuit and was particularly famous for her wit which was often spiced with a lot of double entendres. Her wit made her a hugely popular star in depression-era audience but at the same time it proved to be controversial and also attracted calls for censorship from certain quarters.
