Sumatran Rhino Give Birth in Way Kambas National Park

Did you know, only 4 Sumatran rhinos have been successfully born in captivity? Three of whom were born in Way Kambas, Indonesia.

A Historic Moment in the midst of the G20 Presidency. A Sumatran rhino named Rosa gave birth to her baby at the Rhino Sanctuary, Way Kambas National Park. Reproduction of a rhino is not an easy matter, it takes 476 days before a baby rhino is born into the world. Rosa was translocated to the Rhino Sanctuary in 2005. It was only in 2015 that she successfully bred. Two years later, Rosa was able to get pregnant. At least, Rosa experienced 8 cases of miscarriage between the years 2017-2020. The birth of a Sumatran rhino calf demonstrates to the world the success of conservation efforts for protected species in Indonesia. "The birth of the Sumatran rhino is good news amid the efforts of the Government of Indonesia and its partners to increase the Sumatran rhino population," Wiratno, Director General of KSDAE.
