Saudi Arabia is the latest country to join the Arab nations in condemning remarks on Prophet Mohammad. The remarks were made by two BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal and were described as ‘Islamophobic’. This huge controversy erupted amid Vice President Venkaiah Naidu's tour of Qatar in a bid to strengthen trade. Saudi Arabia described BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's comments as insulting. On June 5, Qatar, Kuwait and Iran summoned the Indian envoy. India said that the remarks were made by fringe elements and did not reflect the government's opinion. On June 5, BJP suspended party spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Naveen Kumar Jindal over their comments on Prophet Mohammad. The Congress slammed the BJP for the statements made by two of their party leaders.
