The last film in Phase 2 before Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy was the definitive proof that the MCU had grown successful enough to create a live-action adaptation of any character or group from the Marvel comics. Despite dealing with characters that possessed limited popularity from Marvel comics, Guardians of the Galaxy claimed an impressive $772 million at the box office and went on to become one of the most important sub-franchises within the MCU.
The success of Guardians of the Galaxy would naturally lead to a sequel in the form of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The MCU's most unconventional interstellar heroes went on to make telling contributions to both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in films that marked the Guardians' first time interacting with the MCU Avengers. The Guardians will return to the big screen in Thor: Love and Thunder in a continuation of Endgame's setup, and a third Guardians of the Galaxy film is slated for a 2023 release date.
