If you come across a funeral or religious ceremony in Taiwan, you just might catch a glimpse of a 'li sheng', or an associate of religious rites. These women, often dressed in elegant gowns and elaborate headpieces, help ensure that funerals and temple events run smoothly.

They've been shamed for their revealing outfits and even been accused of disrespecting the temple’s sanctity, but the troupe persists in their mission to preserve Taiwan's temple culture and make a positive difference in the community.
