Beijing Begin Mass COVID Testing
A spike in COVID cases in China has pushed the Beijing government to begin mass COVID testing across the country to combat the virus. The Chaoyang district reported 26 cases over the weekend, and queues outside markets and shops piled up because residents feared another food and supply shortage. The testing is an effort by Beijing to prevent a situation similar to Shanghai, which has seen around 25 million quarantined at home for many weeks. Some residents have complained of shortages while fresh food companies in the capital have been ordered to increase their inventories. This latest outbreak, which began in March, has killed nearly 140 people and infected 400,000.
