Why is it important for Russia to capture Mariupol?

Amid gruesome conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Ukraine's President Zelensky has claimed that so far more than 3000 Ukrainian civilians have been successfully rescued from Mariupol. Russia has made huge explosions and bombing on Mariupol. It has become the most heavily bombed and damaged city in Ukraine's war with Russia - having suffered the brunt of sustained Russian attacks.
