Two months ago, more than one million mostly Muslim Rohingya refugees that had fled a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state -- were living in cramped, makeshift camps in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh -- the world’s largest refugee settlement. They are now being relocated to Bhasan Char -- an island in the Bay of Bengal. But is this solution suitable or even desirable for Malaysia? Melisa Idris and Sharaad Kuttan speak to lawyer Norman Fernandez wrote an opinion piece in Sinar Harian today that called for a similar relocation programme of Rohingya refugees in Malaysia, to a dedicated island or area.
